Hurricane Fiona made a devastating impact on Puerto Rico. Many communities have dealt with significant flooding, thousands of homes were left without power and water, and the Puerto Rico National Guard rescued dozens. Puerto Rico Hurricane Tax Relief

The IRS has extended Puerto Rico hurricane tax relief to February 15, 2023 for residents and business-owners. The declaration postpones tax-filing and payment deadlines to this date for taxpayers who live or have a business in the disaster area if they qualify under certain circumstances. Affected taxpayers also have the option of disaster-related casualty losses on their federal income tax return for either 2021 or 2022.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

FEMA has made federal assistance available to eligible individuals and families affected by Hurricane Fiona. Visit www.disasterassistance.gov to apply for disaster assistance. FEMA also lists a variety of other local resources and disaster support information.

Puerto Rico Treasury Department

In response to Hurricane Fiona, the Puerto Rico Treasury Department announced the availability for Qualified Retirement Plans and individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to issue special hardship distributions. The PR Treasury also granted employers temporary income tax exemptions on payments and certain benefits made to employees and/or independent contractors for relief.

The National Flood Insurance Program through FEMA offers personal property coverage to make sure recovery is possible after a natural disaster.
